Hi again guys.
The RC Prestige I'm buying (maybe... still sitting there with a small deposit on it) is 22 years old. I thought it was 'younger' but after inquiring about it's history, it has been used by a principal clarinetist for about 10 years, and been 'sitting there' for about another 8 or so.
I've been told I'd be 'crazy' if I bought it. However, I loved the way it played when I tried it extensively in the shop, and the mechanism seemed to be in excellent condition. However, I'm no technician, so I wouldn't really know. It has obviously been well looked-after too. I'm going to hopefully take my teacher in to play it, have a look at it, get another opinion.
I guess my question is more or less about a clarinet's lifetime, and is AU$2,000 worth it for an RC Prestige A, albeit 20-yo?

Morrigan, if it has no cracks, has not been abused, the mechanics are good and it plays well for you, what more can you ask of an instrument? And at that price (less than US$1200)? Bearing in mind the concensus opinion that clarinets do not "blow out" (and I would have thought given the amount of use an "A" gets it is in little danger of that anyway), I think you are on a winner. I would take a close look at the credentials and perhaps motives, of the people who think you would be "crazy" to buy it. Get your teacher's opinion.

Plus, if it's never cracked, it's very unlikely to crack on you now! My teacher told me that the majority of clarinets that crack crack in the first 6 years or so.
