 Tuning

A few weeks ago I was in a compition with the highschool band. We played very well and had all our rythems right, but we had major tuning problems. We were all in tune at first but as we played, and had long rests our instruments got really out of tune. The music we played is also in all the ranges possible so as we got higher we got sharper, and lower we got flater. Our teacher is new, and she doesn't have many ideas on how to fix this except for smile more when we go lower and frown more when we go higher. This really doesn't seem to help much. Does anyone have any tips on making sure we all stay tuned?

Thanks in advance, Melissa.

Learn to listen!!!! It is far more important to play in tune rather than "be in tune." Tuning to a tuner on one note is not suficient for good performance intonation. It takes a continuous aural descretionary effort that comes from learning the tuning tendencies of all the notes on all of your instruments tempered with everyone listening and adjusting to correct pitch discrepancies that will inevitably occure. Developing good listening skills need to be stressed during every home or school practice--they do not happen just because you tune to the tuner (or piano) before the concert.

Bottom line (again)--LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN.....and then adjust (unless all you want to play is bass drum)
