Gnarly Buttons

I just picked up a new solo yesterday called Gnarly Buttons by John Adams. Only one question-in the first movement, I see the marking 5:4 and 19:14. Does that mean 5 notes in 4 counts and such? Thanks in advance.

Almost. The 5:4 means that you should play the 5 grouped eighth notes evenly over the time it normally takes to play 4 eighth notes (2 counts since the time signature is 4/4 at that point). Similarly the 19:14 indicates that you should play the 19 grouped eighth notes over the time it would take to play 14 (i.e., 7 counts). The 19 notes cover one full measure and the first three beats of a second measure.

Tough piece of music. (Moooooo! See, I can almost do the cow part.) Let us know when and where you are going to perform it.

Thanks! In regards to the performance date-maybe three or four months down the line at my house with only my puppy as the audience. (maybe I'll force my fiance to listen)
