Hi,
My orchestra is about to begin rehearsing shostakovich 5, and i had a quick question for all of you. My conductor was very pleased w/ my performance in our last concert and told me i could choose which part to play this time (bflat or eflat clarinet). I haven't listened to the piece that closely and was wondering if the eflat part is good, if there are any solos, etc., or should i just play bflat? thanks.

It's a terrific E flat part with some great solos and the opportunity to really dominate the orchestra in loud tuttis, if you're good at the top. The first part is also good, so have a listen before you decide.

Lucy -
I'd go with Bb. The big Eb solo is great fun, but there are lots of Bb solos, as well as a generally more interesting part.
Best regards.

I had to make the same choice last year and chose the principal part for the reasons Ken mentioned. That said, you'll need a good Eb player to be able to pull it off.
