 Symphony concert planning ?
Author: bob49t

Can anyone suggest a big wind work by an American composer to complement Copland "Fanfare for the Common Man", Copland Clarinet Concerto and William Grant Still "Afro - American Symphony."

Really we're offsetting the exclusive string/harp orchestration of the Copland Concerto.

? Possibly something lined up like the Dvorak Wind Serenade ?

This is for September 13th.

Thanks for any forthcoming suggestions and/or comments or advice.

There's a terrific work by American Easely Blackwood. Chamber Symphony, op. 2, I believe. It's a 22 minute, 3 movement work. Highly chromatic and contrapuntal. Shows evidence of his studies with Hindemith and of his mastery of orchestration, harmony, counterpoint and form. Both difficult and complicated, but not like Wozzek or anything. More like one of the late Strauss sonatinas in difficulty (not in length).

It is scored for 14 players. 2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl, bass cl, 2 bsn, contra, 4 horns. I think there is a piccolo double and an eh double in 2nd books.

I have wanted to conduct this one for a while. I hope I get an opportunity soon.

I recently played (for the 1st time) Virgil Thomson's "The Plow That Broke The Plains". It is the film score of the movie (by the same name).

It is scored for full orchestra (including saxophones), with a few nice exposed principal clarinet solos. There are 9 very short sections, all between one and four minutes long, and any number of them can be programmed. We did #1, #3, #6, #7, #8 and #9. (#3 and #6 have the major clarinet and saxophone solos).

This interesting orchestral work is one that should be performed more often...GBK

"Big wind work" is pretty vague; here's some suggestions of fine and challenging concert band works by American composers that'll worthily complement your program (and keep the band on their toes as well as in the practice room).

- Armenian Dances (Part 2) -- Alfred Reed
- Symphony for Band -- Morton Gould
- Rose Variations -- Robert Russell Bennett
- Fantasies on a Theme by Hydan -- Norman Dello Joio
- Aspen Jubilee (w/soprano voice) -- Ron Nelson
- Icarus and Daedalus Fantasy -- Keith Gates
- Gazebo Dances -- John Corigliano
- The Last Days of Pompeii (ballet mvts.) -- John Phillip Sousa
- J'ai ete au bal -- Donald Grantham
- Divertimento in F -- Jack Stamp
- Symphony No. 2 "Romantic" -- Howard Hanson
- Overture from, "The School for Scandal" -- Samuel Barber

addendum: Of course, the Hanson and Barber orchestral works transcribed for band.

Thank you HAT, GBK and ken, for your suggestions - will follow them up.

HAT - do you happen to know who the publisher of the Blackwood piece might be ? I'll look it up in the clarinet list file anyway.

Cheers,

Bob T

Blackwood is published by Elkan Vogel which I believe is now handled by Presser in the USA.

Hope it works out.
