I sent my Vandoren 5RV Lyre to the shop for a new cork. In the meantime, I'm playing on my stock R-13 mouthpiece for the first time. Aside from being made of plastic and not rubber, can anyone contrast this mouthpiece to equivalent Vandorens or other makes with regard to playing qualities, facings, etc.
I find the stock Buffet mouthpiece to be a little more resistent but able to generate more dynamic range, and a little easier to get high notes (with less vulnerability to sqeaks). I understand that the plastic material likely contributes to more of a bell tone, ie, not quite as mellow (dark?) sounding as the 5RV. Is it more similar to a B45 than 5RV?
Any thoughts?
