Hi,
I am currently starting to work on the Suite for clarinet and piano by Halsey Stevens. I was wondering if anyone had any backround information on the composer and piece. Any tips on technique or performance would be great. I was also wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a recording of it. So far I haven' t found anything
Thanks,
Chris

check out the Concerto by the same composer. I have a recording of Mitchell
Lurie performing it. It was commissioned for Lee Gibson who was clarinetist
at North Texas State at the time.

Play the 2nd the 3rd movement on A clarinet.
Skip the 4th movement entirely. A very weak ending for this suite.
Some of the rhythmic figures are interesting, but the majority of the solo is trite and predictable.
There is an alternate version of this solo for viola. As this suite actually sounds a bit better on viola, it should probably be played by them.
(After all, how many times can you hear violists playing the same Concerti by Telemann and Stamitz, or the Weber Opus 35 Hungarian Rondo?)
No clarinet recordings of this piece that I am aware of (probably for some of the above reasons)...GBK
