I'm performing Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony on Thursday. I'm having trouble switching from my A-Bb after the first movement. Not only is the timing an issue, but my A-clarinet likes a softer reed than my Bb does. Any suggestions?

Have you tried another mp (the same model) for your A clarinet. This prevent of lose your ligature and reed when you change fast.
It is possible to transpose the first or second movement. Sometimes this is a good solution, as in Polovetsian dances where after the first part with the A clarinet you have 5 or 6 bars to change and, inmediately, a very difficult solo.

I would suggest trying to find a reed that is something in between, that you can use with both clarinets. In orchestral repertoire you are required to change between B-flat and A clarinets frequently. You shouldn't have to change reeds and mouthpieces to do this.
Am I right that the 1st movement is on A and the 2nd on Bb? Tell the conductor that you have to change instruments, and ask him to give you a bit of time.
