Here is a good thread to read concerning the bis key:

Not really a bis key, but has anyone seen a piece of metal added on to the LH 1st finger E/B key, underneath? It looks like a half hole device like on a bass clarinet or oboe. Any comments?

GBK's earlier-thread reference above, contains the info [TKS,Mark C], that I RE-discovered [should have read it first!!] via dictionary where "bis", from Fr/Latin means twice, encore, and alternate [in our use here]. On antique fingering charts, Klose, for Boehm, shows two bis', the next-to-top trill key as bis to the A key, and the left hand "banana" key as bis to the lowest trill key, obviously alternates. K and Lazarus also show a bis on the 15 key [what we call Albert] chart, with no "commentary" about its use, and some of our "good books" dont even mention it per se. My recollection is that conventional sax fingerings have several bis', and my LeBlanc Model 100 has more as well as several more fork fingerings. Oboes have some and prob. bassoons also, but that's beyond me!! TKS, Alseg, today is a good day, I learned something!! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Alseg asks 'what does it do?'
It enables you to play E flat/B flat with just thumb and 1st finger.
The E flat is probably unacceptably sharp, but the high B flat is not too far off and is very useful to play a G-B flat tremolo for example.
It's possible to hold this key down without extra keywork if you have big enough hands. I do it a lot.

I remember seeing this key on an old (pre-war) Boosey & Hawkes 1010. It wasn't standard but didn't look like an 'add-on'

Trying 'edit my post'
I certainly didn't press post twice and notice lots of similar duplications

I need to know exactly what you did and what browser you have to be able to solve the double posting problem. It's never happened to me.

Please send the info (when it happens) to me offline.

Michael - The device that you describe on Bass Clarinet is apparently a vent for your alitissimo notes. Mine sound much better if I vent the pinhole with the E/B key still depressed, rather than removing my finger completely from the key and opening up the entire tonehole.

Other things mentioned as Bis -
I've seen the fork/sliver Eb/Bb referred to from time to time as Bis. Given the definition of Bis as a 'second' fingering, this would seem to make sense.

On pitch problems with Bis -
I don't think that pitch problems with Bis would negate the benefit of the key. After all, we're talking about something to get us through extremely fast passages, right? I for one would love its effect on the C diminished arpeggio (chalemeau) and C# diminished (clarion).

On the physical characteristics -
The only worry that I would have about a Bis key on clarinet is that you don't have a lot of room to slide down your left index finger before the E/B hole is vented. This means that the bis key would have to be placed so close to the E/B hole that there is a strong chance of accidental use.

I have always longed for a LH Ab/Eb lever, but recently played an A clarinet that had this improvement and hit it by accident several times. It made me seriously reconsider my desire for such a key.

One of my "standard" fingerings for Eb/Bb is to use L1 as usual and depress the adjacent pad with L2. A bit sharp without any correction from the chops, perhaps, but it works okay for me.

Interesting thread, as I was unaware of any widget to attach that would allow the pad to be depressed also by L1.

Regards,
John
