 Is the E-11 442 pitch?
Author: allencole

I recall seeing some discussion that the Buffet E-11 might actually be made for a 442 A. I can't find anything conclusive on the site so far.

Has this question been settled conclusively?

Also, during a recent trip to Washington Music Center I noticed quite a few Buffet R13 A's in stock with 442 pitch marked on the boxes. This puzzles me, to say the least.

Yes, as I own an E11 it is in A442 so to be able to play in A440 I'ved had to resort to buying a longer barrel.

I played on an E-11 for a long time and I never noticed anything strange about it. I think mine is 440. How old are the ones you're talking about?
Mine is about 5 years old now.

One thing to remember:
A clarinet set for 442 will be .45 cents sharp on concert A - not horribly far and easily accomodated for 440 by a longer barrel.

But wait, you say, the ratios of the distance between or diameters of the tone holes will be wrong!

Correct. They're also wrong when you play it with the "designated" tuning. The placement and size of clarinet tone holes are a big tradeoff and are mostly "incorrect" (in the wrong place or of the wrong size or occupy the wrong volume ... depending on the note) anyway.

Surely you don't mean 0.45 cents? I don't know the exact measurement, but I would think that an A at 442 would be about 4 cents sharper than an A at 440? Or did you mean 4.5 cents?

Color me stupid ... I did the math wrong (2/440, which is clearly wrong - that comes out to .0045 more or less, which is a pitch inaccuracy of .45%)

There's about 26 hz between A and A# (using A=440), so 442 Hz is 2/26 or about 7.7 cents sharp compared to a=440.
