On the sax web, folks were talking about a "new" 2 piece plastic bass clarinet actually made by Yamaha ( the older ones were really Vitos?)....I believe the number was YCL 221. Has anyone got any hands on experience with these basses? Thanks

I have yet to see it.
Some details can be found on http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/winds/index.htm
That Vito is nowhere near the quality I associate with plastic Yamaha instruments! I was astonished that Yamaha even allowed their name to be used on it, and a Yamaha Engineer from Japan seemed embarrassed by its presence when I mentioned it a few years ago.

I just started renting this Yamaha bass last month, and I can say that they are fairly decent. You can't compare them to the top of the line bass clarinets, but they will definitely get the job done. I have been able to play the "Till" and "Grand Canyon Suite" excerpts without any hitch. If it will allow me to play those pieces than I can't complain.
