 Barret Action

I put out the posting about the 'Mazzeo’ system clarinet', and it reminded me of a clarinet I had as a teenager. When I was first starting to play I had an E.J. Albert Simple system clarinet, I was told it had a Barret Action and the guy who told said he did not understand why it had not become a part of the standard keywork on clarinets, would anybody agree with this?

Having "fought" the oboe for several years, I found use of the Barret mechanism for the mid-staff and octave Bb's and C's very handy [indispensible!]. Baines has some info on it, Brymer and others, not much, and I think I can see why it "lost out" on cls, particularly the Boehm, with it's having a thumb-hole ring and actuaed-pad above the 1st finger ring for our F/C, with the Eb/Bb attainable via several fingerings/tone-holes. Try and see! Don
