 Muncy Winds Clarinets
Author: Annie
Date:   2003-02-20 00:55

Hello fellow Clarinetists! I am college and I am looking at getting both Bb and A Vintage R13 clarinet. My teacher suggested that I get them through Muncy Winds because he adjusts all the instruments and will give me a 2-week trial on three of each. I was just wondering what your experiences were with Muncy. Thank you in advance.

You'll need to be able to charge the TOTAL price of every instrument to a major credit card.

Phil does terrific work, but he gotsta git pay-id.

(I buy from Muncy as my Mail-order supplier. See if you can get any free Hunter fur in the deal.)

whats a hunter fur?

I was also going to get my case and a muncy barrel..I tried them in my lesson and loved them..and many different kinds of reeds..experiment time :)

Thats one of my problems, no one in my family has a credit card (they all have terrible credit) so that will be hard to work out. I am taking out a student loan to buy them.

Hi Annie,

So what are playing now? I would have to think twice (no, four or five times)about taking out a student loan to buy clarinets. Too much of that that stuff up and you to might end up with "terrible credit."

Hi Annie,

uta.edu? As in Texas?

Did you go to TMEA? Muncy was there and had some clarinets on display.

I have not bought a clarinet from them. I usually buy my clarinet supplies from them and never had any problems at all.

Hope this helps

Rynn

Muncy is great to deal with, I've purchased 3 instruments (including an R13) from them since Aug of 2000 as well as supplies. No problems at all.

I have bought most of my supplies from the Muncy's for a number of years now. So much so that Pam (Phil's wife) knew my address from memory!! Anyway. I buy all my reeds from them, I have bought a few barrels, and many other supplies as well. I also bought a bass clarient from them about a year agao, a Buffet Low C prestige, 1193 I believe. I tried three, one was a used instrument. The Muncy's were great, and got the horns to me no problem, and they all were great instruments.
I also went through them when my undergraduate school bought a new Eb clarinet. they gave us a good price and the horn worked extremly well. It was a Buffet Prestige Eb. I'm also now finishing my masters degree in clarinet performance. So I've been nuying from them for a long time. I've never really had a problem with them or their service.
I ordered a barrell from them once, a Chaddash, and was not pleased with the bore was cut, very rough. I called and they sent another one out right away and all was taken care of.
You should have no problems with them, they've always been great to deal with.
Good luck
Aaron

I bought a set of clarinets from Muncy Winds last year. Good folks to work with, in my opinion.

I think that S.B.'s "Hunter fur" means extras or some other things thrown in for free.

I would also recommend Instrumental Musical Suppliers from DesPlaines, IL. but, as with any other mail order supplier, they will require credit card collateral--and they do charge the full amount to your card immediantly, even if you decide to return the instrument after the two-week trial period. I recently took out a Buffet Prestige A clarinet "on approval" from IMS and returned it, only to discover that it had already been charged to my credit card which we like to "pay in full" every month. IMS did issue a credit to my card, but only after six weeks--during which, in the meantime, I had to really srimpe on household needs in order to pay the cards monthly bill to avoid "big interest" being incurred.

Doing some research of the Sneezy Classifieds and Sponsers might also provide a good source of vintage R13's for you.

If money and credit are big issues, then perhaps consideration of Buffets intermediate and "entry level" clarinets would be an option. I play a Buffet E11 (student model) C clarinet that is fantastic. As I stated above, my other instruments are Buffet pro level R13's and Prestige instuments, but the little E11 C fits right in, plays with a good sound and is in tune. I suspect the other E11 A, Bb and Eb soprano clarinets are of similar quality and give you that typical "Buffet" sound for a reasonable cost. My daughter, BTW, plays on a Buffet E11 Bb that plays almost as nicely as my own R13.

I'm not sure, but I think Hunter is the dog that sometimes hangs out at the Muncy Winds store. Rumor has it that he's quite friendly. Can't say for sure, because he wasn't there when I stopped by last year.
