Does anybody out there in the ether know what set up Kenny Davern uses, instrument M/P etc.
I was once told that at some time in his career he played an Albert system, I believe he had a band called the Salty Dogs that played in the New Orleans tradition(dance hall jazz/music)

Thanks for the link to Vandoren, I am gratified to know that he uses my set up, for the last few years I have been using a Vandoren 5JB M/P with V12 reeds.

Hi Bazzer:
"Does anybody out there in the ether know what set up Kenny Davern uses, instrument..."
I worked with Kenny about a year ago. He was playing a plastic/hard rubber Conn from the 1920-30's. It's a great horn, and I played and loved it. I bought one on eBay, after trying Kenny's, but it's a dog! Maybe Kenny's great vibes make an otherwise average horn play great!

P.S. Give Kenny a call, he's at:

Hi JJM,
A plastic Conn, amazing, I must look out for one, I had a clarinet in my early days that was not made of wood, it was called 'composition'(I think?)I was not experienced enough then to know how good it was, I had it for years secreted away in the pantry in my dads hotel as I played others, when I eventually dug it out from the back of the pantry it had turned green!

Hi Bazzer:
Check with Kenny before you buy anything!
I think he knows the good "vintage" Conns from the bad old Conns.
Mine is plastic/hard rubber(?), and it's awful.
Also, there are HP (high pitch)and LP (low pitch), so go for the LP.

On one of his CDs Kenny definitely is identified as a Vandoren artist. Interestingly enough, on the Selmer Paris website "http://www.selmer.fr/html/english/musiciens/clare.htm" Kenny is listed as playing a Selmer instrument, model not disclosed !!

Hi Ralph:
Kenny is quite a character!
He has played Selmers & Buffets, and probably every other make you can name. But, for the record, he regularly plays his favorite Conn whenever asked to play a great jazz gig.
His sound and style are unique, and he could play as well on anything that works, but for a buck, he can be seen playing a Selmer or Buffet.

Kenny spends lots of time undercutting toneholes (a little at a time) and sets the pad heights his one self...
Calling Kenny a Buffet or Vandoren artist is a strict interpretation
he plays the stuff but it ain't stock.
I heard him in NJ eight years ago, wailing on the charts with some hard rubber Pruefer that had turned distinctly green with age.
I suppose this gives him a great sound and insures that no one steals his gear...
I thought he was out in Arizona?
*This is an illustration about what I have often said about gear...
the last steps in setup by a professional make the greatest of
differences.*
