I've been listening to the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band collection- and am struck by what an incredible clarinetist Peanuts Hucko is. Any comments?

You know, I think everyone was a student of Russianoff! ( ;^)

(My teacher in Ann Arbor was a student of Russianoff, and I swear every other professional I've heard that's over 40 was at one time or another a student of Russianoff)

Hi Mark & GBK:
Many of us here in NYC knew and loved Leon Russianoff.
Stanley Drucker, and many others here studied with and idolized Leon. Stanley even named his son, Leon, after Russianoff (Leon Drucker is now better known as "Lee Rocker" of the Stray Cats).
But there are quite a few of us who didn't, for various reasons, study with Leon. I, for one, knew him very well, visited his NY shop often, and spoke to him about many things. We even did a joint-lecture at The Aspen Music Festival together. I spoke about Joe Allard techniques, and Leon spoke about his teaching methods.
At the time Leon was teaching in NYC, there were many fine teachers also giving high quality lessons, such as:
Joe Allard
Gus Duques
Bernie Portnoy
Kal Oppermann
Arthur Christmann
Dave Oppenheim
Dave Glazer
Herb Blayman
Dave Weber
Jimmy Abato
and others...
It was a great time for learning, and Leon Russianoff was one of the many fine teachers this great city had to offer.
JJM

Was it Peanuts who played the cl lead in the GM sax sections of the "war years"?, as the recordings show stand-out volume [over 4-5 saxes] with quality tone! I've heard it attributed to "big-bore" Balanced-Tone Selmers of that time period. Don
