Author: Melissa

Hello everyone tomorrow I am performing a solo at a local compitition and I was wondering if anyone has any hints on staying focused and not being so nervous. I also am being very pesimistic right now and all I can think of is how I am going to fail. Anyone have any tips?

It's too late for tomorrow's competition, but I recommend the book The Inner Game of Music by Timothy Gallwey (I think) which contains much wisdom in mental tricks to maximise performance potential.
To sum up; You know you can do it, allow yourself to.

The best advice i can give is to allow yourself to make mistakes. Once you come to grips with your humanity it's easier to overcome it. In a performance i always allow myself a set number of say squeaks depending on the piece so that if i make under that many i can still say i did a good job if i go over that means next time i need to work to get it under. Set for yourself a tangible goal. Also, come to grips with the fact that failure in any sense is a part of life and proves to be a better teacher than success. Sweet is only sweet when compared to bitter so enjoy both the good and the bad. The way i see it the more bads i have the more goods i'm likely to have later on so let the rejection come. Allow yourself to learn from these experience and just go in and have fun. That's the most important. Once you take music out of its function as enjoyment youo set yourself up for failure. Just jump in with both feet firmly planted and go for it. A musical performance with a few mistakes to me is more enjoyable then a stagnant perfectly executed performance :-) Good Luc

Hi Melissa

As I'm writing this, you may well be in the middle of your performance and I do hope it's going well. I sympathize with your feelings. But you should know a couple of things, positive things about what you have posted. 1) Your pessimism is directly related to how much you care and how much you want to do well 2) your feelings that you may fail demonstrate that a) you are humble b) you are human c) you are honest - I'm willing to bet most people will feel this way at one time or another - may though will never admit it.

I'm willing to bet that you did well, because of all these qualities. If you feel you didn't: 1) you are a pretty hard critic of your own playing so realize that you are probably judging your performance way too harshly 2)if you made mistakes, consider that this will have humanized your performance. Only robots and machines play flawlessly and how many of us would want to listen to that. I agree 100% with Romaggio's point of view on this.
