 Old Leblanc model question....
Author: John Gibson
Date:   2003-02-15 22:27

Hey kids....
Don't jump my bones about doing a search....I did....and came up with nothing....
I want to know (one more time).....about old 50s--60s---70s Leblancs. I'm looking at a Classic II on ebay. I understand that the Dynamic H was basically the forerunner for the Pete Fountains.
And that the Symphonies are the.....well...Symphonies....but the "Classic" line has me baffled. Where does it fit in with all the others? And since they don't make it anymore, is it still a good horn to purchase? Any bore size info....playability info....any info would help. Bottom line...is it a good horn?
ALSO....saw a couple Leblancs on ebay with extra Bb "gizmos" and a weird lower pad arrangement....3 on the lower join right side, and a fourth on the left lower joint. Model "C B" or "C 8", or something.....what's that all about?

I know someone will post a response to this ramble.....so thanks..

John

John,

I've also looked at the instruments (and bid on the Classic II) that you are asking about. I think the older LeBlanc with the CB inscribed on the top joint was distributed by Cundy-Bettoney, hence the insignia. However, that is pure speculation as I have not seen a vintage LeBlanc marked that way before.

As far as the Classic II is concerned I believe it was marketed in the early to mid 60's. Once again, that is speculation on my part. I bought one a few years ago for resale. It was a good instrument. I don't believe I measured the bore. I don't remember the specs if I did. Good luck.

I have a 1947 Leblanc that is set up this way- it's is my main horn. Great instrument! The key work is just beautiful.

Here is a link from the BB when I bought it with some good explanations.

I recently overhauled Classic II and Symphony 3. The Classic had the most beautiful unstained rosewood I've ever seen but was just below average player. The Symphonie 3 turned out one of the best clarinets I've ever played.

I bought the Classic II from John Butler. It plays very well, so at least you can be assured they're good clarinets if expertly set up. I checked with Leblanc. They said my SN 309xx was made in 1969, professional model, .582 bore.

I checked the link above and found my response to that question. Played my grandson's Classic cl recently, still almost as "good" as, and similar to, my newer LeB L7!. Hope some survived L's terrible fire. Don

I purchased a new Classic Le Blanc in 1958.
It is basically a Jazz instrument although
I used it in College Concert band.
The bore is a smaller size.
