I am starting my search for a C clarinet. Trying a Penzel Muller (old model) from friend. Does not have quality of my vintage Buffets? I'm open to all comments. (i.e. -- don't expect quality, try another brand, mouthpieces) My B/A mouthpieces do no fit. Have any idea of price range?

for the $ (900-975) you can't beat the E11 as bob suggested.
your B/A mp should fit with no problem.
Of course, order one/two on a trial basis and also order a Chadash C bbl. The bbl is available through the major retailers. If not, you can order one direct from Chadash himself. He's listed in the Vendor section.
Plz note........Ell C's are hard to come by. Per Francois Klock, they are made more for the European market in mind, thus the limited shipments to the US. Seems many beginner European clarinetists start with a C and then 'graduate' into a Bb.

Leblanc also make 3 models Noblet, Esprit and Concerto. The European practice of starting on a C clarinet is most common with the German system. This is to cope with the longer finger span of Oehler instruments.

A Buffet E 11 that I tried a while back was great with good pitch, intonation, sound, and construction. Last week, I briefly tried an Amati that a friend bought. It was fine on all aspects except that the pitch level was generally too low, which could be corrected by a shorter barrel. It might also come up in pitch after being played a while. Good hunting!

I've tried the Buffet E-11 with a Chadash barrel at IMS (International Musical Suppliers) and really liked it. I ended up buying the Patricola C because it was a bit nicer and had the extra eb/ab key. But, the Patricola was a bit more expensive as well. In addition to the Leblancs mentioned above, they also make an Opus model that is supposed to be one of the darkest sounding of the C clarinets on the market.

I have a Buffet E11 C clarinet that I selected from a group of five at International Musical Suppliers. They all, however, played well and the choice was difficult--but I think I got a "good one." I, too, purchased a Chadash barrel (at IMS) but now prefer the original Buffet barrel. For the $$'s and the performance, I recommend the Buffet E11 C clarinet. It has a nice "perky" response and sound.

I agree that the E-11 is probably the best buy on the market for a C. Give Lisa a call at IMS and see if she has some in stock.

I just played Rosenkavalier this week on a borrowed Patricola clarinet. While I do not have that much experience playing C clarinet, I did feel it played fairly well in tune and the response was pretty good, except on long B.

I have to vote once again for the Patricola C. But, I would suggest the Grenadilla wood model for a darker tone. You might add a Gregory Smith mouthpiece (ask him about this) because I heard he was play-testing some Patricola Cs to match with his mouthpieces.
