I'm talking archival quantities here. Some friends of mine use legal-size file cabinets, which would make my apartment look like a Salvation Army office. My "solution" has been standing the music up in citrus boxes, but even a file cabinet is an improvement on THAT. I tried rustic baskets from Pottery Barn, but that's just a gussied-up citrus box--sits on the floor, you trip over it, the music accumulates dust, etc.
My criteria are accessibility (both for folios and for loose xerox sheets of orchestral parts), neatness, organization (by instrument, since I'm a doubler), and just possibly, esthetics!!
"storage tips from the pros," anyone?

I have found that map chests, which can be purchased fairly easily from a number of home improvement and furniture websites work well and look great. If you don't want to pay $100-200 for a solution try the plastic folios from the container store. They stack well and look good on shelves. Finally, there are a number of web sites that sell strong cardboard storage boxes for music--mainly to choral groups. These also hold most standard to large music and can be stacked on shelves or stood--great storage and relatively cheap ($1-$2 per box......)

Talk to your friendly legal person (oxymoron?) and see if you can scrounge some "Banker's Boxes." They stack, hold standard or legal files etc. Might help

I like to use magazine boxes - the kind designed to stack collections of periodicals upright, (usually about 3" wide, about 9-10" deep and about 12" high). Dollarama used to have the bargain of the century - sold 2 boxes for a buck (Canadian!). I haven't been able to find them recently though. Ikea has lovely wooden boxes, about $7 and large 5" wide ones are sold at Walmart for $4 or $5 or so. They line up nicely on bookshelves, you can label them on the spine and it's relatively painless to pull them out and flick throught the contents.

I have a large, ah, lingerie cabinet in my living room that has almost the same size drawers as a specialized "sheet music" cabinet, was less than half the price, and pretty good quality. However, I should have bought 4 or 5 of them (I've 4 or 5 boxes of music in the basement ...):

Very nice wooden furniture grade file cabinets are available (2 drawer, half height) but are quite expensive. Some of these are nice enough to use as end tables flanking a sofa.
The old college student "cheap chic" trick might work for you, 2 cardboard file boxes stacked on top of each other to get to around 26 - 28 inches high with a cheap round particle board or MDF (medium density fiberboard) table top (buy the top only from a home center) and a fabric throw or table skirt over the whole thing (right down to the floor.) This will hide the whole mess and can actually look quite good. Of course a friendly carpenter or cabinet maker can custom cut a top to size for you, and a decent sewer can make a custom skirt.
At the very high end of the cost curve, a good cabinet maker could custom make file cabinets disguised as dressers, wardrobes, an entertainment center etc. My file drawers are part of the custom computer desk I made myself.

Beautiful piece Mark, looks like cherry. It appears you file horizontally, two stacks per drawer. I see you also proudly display all of your "internet administrator" trophies/awards you've won. Do I see a "John Phillip Sousa" high school bandsmen of the year plaque in there somewhere? ... hehe.

Mahogany, matches a grand piano in the room ...
Those are some of the the piano playing trophys the kids have won over the years. Except for that one in red on the left. That's a red liqueur from Germany or Switzerland I think. <b>My</b> trophy ;^)

Thanks, everybody. At this point I'm leaning toward the magazine boxes (thanks Tatiana) on a yet-to-be-built bookcase, but I'm considering all of the above an open option at this point. Love the pic, mark! What do I spy on the floor in front of the lingerie chest---could it be a box o' music??? Just like what I'm complaining about?
If I come up with anything novel and/or intriguing, I'll let everyone know. Thanks again...

I bought some magazine holders on sale at Target. They came in funky colors and designs and were heavier and sturdier than the ones I previously bought from Office Depot.
