Due to a Prokofiev festival going on here we've played nothing else for weeks, not that I'm objecting, I like his music.
One piece I've never even heard of before is the Ballet "Stone Flower" It's a full-length affair (nearly 2 hours) and is a fine piece. I can't understand why it's not done more often, maybe it is elsewhere.
It uses 4 clarinets, 2/E flat/bass and the E flat part was a delight. You could write a whole excerpt-book from it. I kept copies of the interesting bits and ended up with pages and pages of stuff that's well worth having.
If you ever have to play it make sure you get the material well in advance.

I understand that full length ballets are rare in ballet (apart from a handful of perennial favourites), because audiences prefer two or three different ballets at one sitting. I imagine that is why it is rarely done as a ballet and could explain why it has not made it into the popular repertory for concert versions.
Are you recording it Jez? It would be good to hear it on a recording.

It was recorded by Chandos and, I'm told, will be released in April.

Wow, a new recording of Stone Flower. The library where I grew up had a copy of the old Russian recording and I taped it and listened to it many many times during my youth.
I envy you getting to play it, Jez. I always thought it was some of his most beautiful music.
