i have a small hair line crack in my upper joint.
how much should this cost to repair?
what's the best method? i've heard of pinning and graphite banding.
who are some good repairmen in the new england/new york/montreal area?

Sorry to hear of your problem. As for the question in the subject, the type of repair is most appropriately determined by an excellent technician after a thorough examination of the instrument. Remember, that's an *excellent* technician, one who has extensive experience in dealing with cracks. If the crack is truly minor, perhaps neither pining nor banding will be required. But that must be called by one who is solidly in the know.
And as has been stated on the BB many times, a properly repaired crack should offer no problem with regard to playing the instrument.

My A-clarinet cracked over a tone hole some years ago. My repair man glued the crack. (I think that involved first opening up the crack a bit, glueing and then closing. Yikes!) In any case, it worked well, and hasn't opened up again. You can hardly even see where the crack was.

A little Elmer's wood glue and a black magic marker will take care of it ;-)

Super Glue will work, but you have to control setup time so that the crack is closed when the glue sets.
Is Elmer's wood glue waterproof?
I agree on having a good technician look at it. They will know how to apply glue to set correctly, and make a good repair both mechanically and cosmetically.

Mebbe the PVA version of Elmer's, but the standard white glue doesn't take well to resinous woods like Ebony (Grenadilla).
Me, I would go to an established repair shop and take a pin (or 3).
$40 in my neighborhood for the service.

I'm sure Mark was just joking about the Elmer's. However, Bill Brannen always said that if you couldn't get to a repairman right away, super glue would prevent more damage.
