 WS Sumner Company

I have been on a long drawn out search to find some sort of information on the old woodwind company called WS Sumner. They were responsible for a line of mouthpieces, ligatures and reeds called "Acousticut" for the entire clarinet and saxaphone families. I understand that they were pretty big in the 70's, but that is all I have been able to find out. Where did they go? I've played on the Acousticut ligature that is phanominal, but can't find anyone who knows what it is and where any can be found. I've tried all of the search engines, and have asked several different people, but have gotten basically no where.

Anyone able to shed any light?

Sumner was based in Minneapolis. Schmitt Music Co. there may have had a connection with them or information. Check directory assistance for Schmitt and contact them. I had the ligatures years ago...they came in both nickel plated and gold plated models with very interestingly designed screws having ends that looked like violin pegs.

The trademark "Acousticut" was registered by Warren S. Swanson of Minneapolis, MN. The registration was filed in 1962 and showed first commercial use in 1951. The registration has now expired. www.bandandorch.com still shows "Acousticut" sax mouthpieces in their on-line catalog.

An auction on ebay expiring today has a listing under Clarinets for a "WS Sumner clarinet". The listing detail actually reads "It says Acousticut WS Sumner on the mouthpiece." Perhaps a source for the ligature.

I do believe there were Sumner clarinets. I KNOW there were barrels. Am 99% sure of a Sumner clarinet, too.
