Could anyone tell me what it was that Jim Kanter did to his mouthpieces that made them so different? I know that they were asymetrical, but if I'm not mistaken, there was something different that he did to the baffle that made them sound all together different.
Furthermore, if anyone could lend some info as to where I can find one I would REALLY appreciate it. I've tried some of the on-line auction sites, but you never know what you're getting into with those things. :-)

I know Jim well, and have to say that his mouthpieces are some of the best ever made. They are NOT asymetrical, I dont care who says they are, Jim did not do that unles someone asked him to. There is nothing unusual in his baffle work, his facings are where the secret is. Finding a good Kanter is harder than finding a good kaspar or Ched. I have found 10 or so good ones, but it took me years to gather them. Since he doesn't make them anymore, I'd say just watch ebay and post ads, something will turn up.

what do you need 10 good ones for? you'd be doing Mr Kanter a favour if those mouthpieces were out there being used (although if he's out of the bussiness maybe he doesn't care anymore?). I'll buy one.

Well, since we're offering--send me a quote on one as well.
And, if you're looking on eBay, check their feedback. If it's all good and they're a player/seller--you're probably going to be ok. Send me an email and ask me about them--I've been selling clarinet stuff on eBay for a few years now and have gotten to know some of the clarinet sellers pretty well. I know several that sell mouthpieces and are reputable. Many are contributers to this board.

I recently auditioned a Kaspar Cicero mpc that was refaced by Kantor--and for me, it played terribly. Stuffy, unresponsive and inflexablie. But this is not an indictment of Mr Kantors facings (or of Cicero Kaspars), but rather an affirmation of the need to try before you buy and not buy something based solely on reputation. I've always heard good reports regarding Kantor facings and have no doubt that I could find one that I liked--just was that this particular mpc was not "the one."
(the mpc belongs to a fellow Muni Band clarinetist who also doesn't like it and prefers a Borbeck model)
