 My first audition
Author: Nick

Well, I just had my first audition for a local big band (in Syracuse, it's called Stan Collela Youth All-Star Band).

I played my song well (a little jazz song), but screwed up the scales and sightreading out of nervousness. The band isn't looking for clarinets, but I auditioned anyway just for the experience.

I've only been playing for about 7 months, but he said I have a fantastic tone and that I sound a lot like Eddie Daniels. He asked if I knew who that was, and I sort of shyly said yes, although I didn't.

Can anyone tell me a bit about Daniels's playing style or what sets him apart? I didn't quite understand what the auditioner meant and it didn't hit me to ask him until after I had left the building, of course!

Eddie Daniels is one of the best jazz clarinetists of our time. He has a very wonderful tone/style that is not like the 'textbook' varieties you hear and read about. He travels all over the country to teach Master Classes and is a role model for many new, aspiring clarinetists. He also has a ligature that is made to his specifications that many people prefer to use as their favorite set-up.

To have someone compliment you by saying that you sound a lot like Eddie Daniels when you've only been playing for a short while is a BIG compliment. I would feel pretty good about myself if I were you!

Congratulations!
