Hi everybody. I just received 2 beautiful laminated brochures from Pomarico today in the mail (from Italy) and thought I would share some basic "spec" info with all of you.
1) EMERALD 1.02mm tip/18mm facing (0.0401")
2) RUBY 1.09mm tip/18mm facing (0.0429")
3) SAPPHIRE 1.15mm tip/20mm facing (0.0452")
4) DIAMOND 1.25mm tip/20mm facing (0.0492")
The above 4 come in either (B) for bright or (M) for mellow.
They also make a line designated by a number or number/letter combination:
5) #0 1.05mm tip/18mm facing 11) #2C 1.25mm tip/16mm facing
6) #-1 1.10mm 17mm 12) #2L 1.25mm 19mm
7) #1 1.15mm 17mm 13) #3 1.35mm 17mm
8) #1C 1.15mm 16mm 14) #3C 1.35mm 16mm
9) #1L 1.15mm 18mm 15) #3L 1.35mm 19mm
10)#2 1.25mm 17mm 16) #4 1.45mm 17mm
All of the above is for Bb clarinet only. Also included were specs on Eb clarinet as well as for soprano, contralto, and tenor sax.
If you email them at: info@pomaricompieces.com, and give them your name and address, they'll be happy to send you the same brochures which contain a lot of info.

I've used Pomarico crystals for a long time....They are the best.
Have a Diamond....that is so rich in sound that it puts all others to shame.....Riccardo is the man to talk with (e-mail) They are getting ready for a Music show in Frankfurt right now, so they're busy....but Riccardo tells me after March 10th all will "settle down"....If you would please mention my name when corresponding. I'm sure you'll be pleased with their crystals. AND....I have a Pomarico wooden that is exceptional.
The people at Pomarico are just that....people...and a pleasure to deal with.

I am an amateur and currently have a Lablanc LL and a B45 mp. However I am looking for a mp that is more responsive and perhaps requires a little less effort to play. I have heard a lot about crystal mps.
Would Pomarico crystal mp is somethng I should try ! Your comments or any ones comments are most appreciated.

Hi Simon, I've read comments from some on this BB that the LL can be somewhat resistive in nature (however, not all of them.) I've also read from several posts that the B45 is also generally more resistive in nature (IMO, the B45 is not known to be a "free blowing" mpc.) So, (IMO) it looks like you're puffing harder than you need to to produce a good sound. With that in mind, changing your mpc to a "freer blowing" model should make quite a difference for you. If you are used to playing with soft reeds, the Diamond Pomarico is recommended for students or for anyone else who uses soft reeds (I play on #2 Legere reeds exclusively.)
May I suggest you call Woodwind & Brasswind at 1-800-348-5003 and tell them that you would like to test 4 mouthpieces on a trial basis. They are the only ones I know of that will allow you to do this with only 25% down. On all returned mpcs, their cleaning charge is $3.50ea.

Many thanks for your valuable advice , however, one problem I reside in Australia, and I don't think that here in Australia suppliers will send you mps for trial. Any way I have asked for a brochure from Pomarico and once I get it I will be looking for a store that stocks Pomarico mps.

As an Aussie who actually played on a pomarico No 1 for many years, if you email me, I can put you in touch with some Aussie dealers who do let you try before you by, and who stock pomarico stuff.

Many TKS, Dan and John G for this good info. I'm amazed at the degree of subdivision of the listing of combinations of tip-opening and lay length. In a recent E-M exchange w: Riccardo [thanks], re: the ancestry of my [very-good] BASS cl GG's, 3 is my best, he said that the present 2L would be similar. So, I'd like to see listings of bass mps [and alto cl, if made] which I'm playing more than soprano. Will check Pom's web-site, and report any interess. Don

Pom's web-site is beautiful, a bit sparse on info and a bit hard to read tho. Along with sop cl mps was a surprise [NEW], an A!! cl mp, slightly larger??, and a single strap/screw "Light Ligature" , any experience out here? No bass/alto cl mps are shown, but sop/alto/tenor SAX mps have an [apparently] strengthened structure. Guess I'll need to request a brochure like Dan did. Comments? Don

Don: Concerning the 2 brochures, there is no info on the "A" cl mpc nor any info on the single strap/screw "Light Ligature". I suggest emailing them and specifically asking them to send you some literature on those 2 items.
While you're waiting for your brochure, perhaps the following will be useful for you and others:
Eb Clarinetto contralto "specs":
#1 1.30mm tip/20mm lay
#2 1.40mm tip/22mm lay
#3 1.50mm tip/21mm lay
Bb Clarinetto basso "specs":
#1 1.60mm tip/26mm lay
#2 1.80mm tip/26mm lay
#3 1.90mm tip/25mm lay
Their brochures are quite impressive...it seems they spared no expense to produce an exquisitely professional presentation of their products.
My "Ruby" mellow should arrive tomorrow for a trial period. I'm really looking forward to it.

I recently had some communications with Riccardo regarding custom made mouthpieces. It turns out that each of their mouthpieces is hand made, so they can make them however you want. They have devised their various models and such in relation to what they get the most orders for, but they make each mouthpiece individually anyway. I had asked him about making a mouthpiece with a 1.60mm tip opening, and he said it would be no problem.
Just something good to know.

I have had a couple of customized pieces made with large tip openings for jazz. Excellent product and service plus you can't beat the $80.00 price I paid recently for a quality custom crystal mouthpiece.

Pomarico Ruby Mellow is horrible with Vandoren V21 3.5 and V12 3.5+. I thought closed mouthpieces needed hard reeds....

1.09 mm is only close-tipped compared to a B40 or B45 (both 119.5 mm). Closed tips are usually considered to be in the .97mm to 1.05 mm range.

Lust an idea, If you can find a Mitchell Lurie crystal MP these were made by Pomarico. Might be able to pick up one on Ebay at a decent price. I've played several of them. I'm not a crystal fan but these are/were very good. Some of you know I was in charge of his reeds at Rico so I also spent a lot of time with his mouthpieces; making sure the mouthpieces and the reeds were matching up well.
