This may be way to dramatic since I haven't even gotten it back from the shop but I have been thinking about the crack in the upper joint. I really like my clarinet a lot and if this crack proves to have hit the bore, instead of replacing the whole clarinet, does anyone think it's possible to just replace the upper joint?
I know buffet could just replace the joint but I want to hand select something. I know when clarinets are being made that two random joints are put together, but my belief is what makes the clarinet work is when by luck both joints are a good match. Does anyone have any idea where I could buy an upper joint if i need one?

I'm on number 2 upper joint. If it's under warranty, they will replace it, ask the business where you bought it. Otherwise, you would have to pay for a new one, but yes, you can get the single joint. Hope that helps!

When my son's upper joint cracked, Buffet just didn't "replace" it but worked on it to make sure that everything matched. The clarinet was better after replacement of the upper joint than it was before(Francois Kloc doing the work may have had soemthing to do with that ...).

Nope. This was some years back, before "Sneezy" had much exposure. Francois Kloc had just come to the US, and I had a long run-around by a major company in getting things fixed. I emailed Buffet, told them that I was incredibly disappointed and upert that nothing was being done (my son went 3 months with no clarinet after shipping it to the dealer, got it back, and nothing at all had been done to correct the problem!).

The thing is, I know buffet will replace the joint. The thing is they don't play test these joints, they will just pick a random joint, slap my keys on it and ship it off and act like they have done me a service when more than likely the horn will be junk then.
I want to be able to play test upper joints if it comes to it.

Well, if you read the above, you'd see that that was not the result when my son's cracked. Have you called Francois or emailed him? Perhaps that would set your mind at ease.

If you like the way your clarinet plays, you are much better off having the crack repaired--even if it has expanded into the bore. A replacement joint will never play the same--this is almost a verbatum quote made to me by Tom Ridenolur, when he was still with Leblanc.
