Martin Freres

I have a Martin Freres Clarinet purchased used 30 years ago. Is this a good instrument? Should I refurbish it for my 10 year old to learn to play? It was not played a lot, I think it only needs pads and new cork.

Dear Marlene: I once had a Martin Freres wood clarinet which I picked up used for $40...it had been sitting in a guy's basement for a long time (from the mustiness & cobwebs in it!!) but it was in good shape & fully restorable...after a complete overhaul, it looked & played fairly well. The Martin Freres clarinets are OK starter & student horns....not great but not too bad, either...sounds like the one you have doesn't need alot of work to get it back in peak playing condition & would definitely be less expensive than buying another clarinet at present....and probably a good idea for your 10 year old to at least start on...see how they do & how serious they are about continuing with clarinet studies & you can always move on to a better horn later if needed.
