 Buffet Festival sound
Author: Tim

I apologize for bringing this subject up again as it has been discussed at great lenghth in the past. However, I was told by someone at a large mail order company that the Festival has a "sweet" sound but is more suited for chamber music settings. He recommended the R13 for larger band settings. This was not exactly the impression I got from reading all of the past discussions on the Festival. So, do people generally agree with this assessment of the Festival clarinet? Thanks.

Tim

No. He doesn't know what he's talking about.

I have an E11 now, which I've had for over 15 years. I'm interested in a new (either R13 or Festival) clarinet. I want to make sure, since I mostly play in larger bands, that I can get the same power and flexibility out of my new instrument as I can get now. The Festival interests me because of the unstained wood, the gortex pads, and the good things that people have said about it on this board. It would be easy to order some R13s to try, but if I want to try out a Festival, I'm going to have to travel. I don't have a problem doing that, but I want to make sure I'm traveling for a good reason.

Sorry that isn't "crap". Brannen's agree along people at buffet that festival is designed for chamber work and what not. For some reason it doesn't cut through as well as an R13 or a prestige. I tend to agree from my own playing expierence with the festival.

No one said it was "crap", James.

The Brannen's have their own opinion; it doesn't make it law, though I respect their opinion. A quick perusal of the Buffet performing artists will show you that a number of orchestral clarinetists aroung the world use the Festival and they cut through just fine. Just like Ricardo Morales did when he was playing festival clarinets at the Met ...

I am wondering if you could rent the clarinets that you are interested in for a month to do a thorough test. It's much cheaper than being stuck with the wrong clarinet.

"For some reason it doesn't cut through as well as an R13 or a prestige."

I definately don't agree. I have no problem at all, and I know principal players in major symphonies in Australia that play Festivals.

Many clarinetists in professional orchestras in Europe (myself included) play on Festival. I've never had any problem "cutting through" the orchestra.

On Buffet's website they write the following about the Festival:
"It meets the needs of today's musicians and teachers who are faced with the daunting task of interpreting a wide repertoire of works from Mozart to Boulez"

Tim, you have to find the instrument that suits you best. Try several before you buy.

Well, I appreciate the feedback. I think that I need to find a place in the Boston area that carries the Festival so that I can try it out. I'd rather not travel only to find out that I don't like it and could have just had some R13s shipped to my house. I haven't heard of any place around here that has it, so it may be that I have to go to New York City.

I've owned a couple of Festivals and went back to the standard R-13. I found the tone more powerful, although the Festival was a nice instrument. You'll just have to try them side by side to determine which you prefer.

Tim,

I have and use both R-13s and Festivals.

I use my Festivals exclusively for my work with the Dallas Opera. Our current opera hall seats just over 3600 people and half of our pit is covered.....I sit under the stage....

I use the Festival because their sound "gets out of" the pit better than my R13s.
