For an eight bar "dixieland" solo in an orchestral arrangement of the music from "Cats." The principal is a great clarinetist with the written notes, but can't play "Twinkle, Twinkle" by ear--so I voluntered to stand up and "take eight." Not a big deal for me (I do it all the time in our jazz combo) but all of the orchestral heads turned and nodded "in time", the audience clapped, and at the end, I finally got "the nod" from the conductor--and got to actually stand and take a bow. Just though all of you second clarinetists out there would like to know that (once in a while) it DOES HAPPEN!!!!
(and I get to play it again this afternoon--going for a 'perhaps' world record of "two in a row")

Congrats and swing on William ... "every dog has his day!" It never ceases to amaze me how the finest orchestra players respect and even "secretly admire" the jazz musician who can play the styles well and do something well they cannot or hadn't time to learn. The close-minded, high society crowd will always be with us but the truly enlightened lovers and students of the craft will readily appreciate/recognize the jazz as a viable art form ... regardless of their specialty. v/r Ken

William,
As a bass clarinetist I feel your pain. The first time I got to stand for a solo (American in Paris) I thought I would faint from the sheer joy of being acknowledged. Sadly, I am the person who can't play by ear worth a #%^&.
Kudos,
Jean

GBK--Thanks!!!! That is the way it looked to me (perhaps, however, only in my mind's eye)
(BTW--I got another bow yesterday as well) OK, I'll resume my role as the 'humble' second clarinetist who is to be "heard, but not seen."
