I've been playing clarinet for 4 years...and I want to get a new clarinet. I've taken Grade 5 Exam from ABRSM and got a merit. For my level, which clarinet should I choose?

It really is up to you in which clarinet fits your playing style best. I have a Buffet R-13 and I love it! It is an excellent make. But, I know that there are some other good ones out there, too. I would suggest finding a place where they will let you play each one of the clarinets and see which one you feel the most comfortable with. And, just because they have the same name, does not mean that they are all the same. When I bought mine, I went through a company in Chicago that shipped 3 clarinets to me. I had two weeks to try them out and choose the one that I wanted to keep. Then, I sent the other two back. Good luck!

When i got to this level I purchased a Buffet R-13. But it is down to personal taste,

The R-13 is an excellent choice. It's not the most expensive professional clarinet on the market, but it'll last for years and years. And, I agree with the above comment about buying the best you can afford. Get a new one if you can afford one--if not, get one that is in tip-top shape and from a seller who will give you a money-back guarantee.
