 trying out a new barrel
Author: wjk
Date:   2003-02-07 20:16

I've been trying out some new 66 mm barrels....I notice that one that I particularly like does not sit exactly flush with the upper joint(its as if I pulled it out 1mm or so) However, intonation is spot on. Is there any problem? Thanks!

Not as long as it's spot on.

regarding a bbl sitting flush, this is addressed in detail in Hadcock's book The Working Clarinetist. Too much is offered there to share here but if you can get ahold of a copy it's interesting to read about the effects of this 'spacing'.........which btw, also pertains to other joints. And don't forget that in trying out a wooden bbl, rotate it in 90 degree increments to find that 'sweet' spot.
