 Who do y'all like?
Author: Bo
Date:   2003-02-08 03:16

OK...since I am new to the clarinet and most clarinet players, I was wondering who your favorite professional clarinetists are that presently have recordings available (from any time period). My teacher has given me an assignment to listen to as many clarinetists as I can over the next month. I only know a few: Richard Stoltzman, Tony Scott, Benny Goodman and Pete Fountain.

Thanks ahead of time. :)

There was a thread just a little while back on "underappreciated jazzers" that came up with an interesting list of names. You could find it again by searching.

Personal favorites include Pee Wee Russell, Barney Bigard, Jimmy Hamilton, David Krakauer. I also like many of the current crop of "avant-klez" players, like Ben Goldberg and Glenn Dickson (for example).

The clarinet has a rich and intersting history in many musical genres--you've got an assignment that in a month you can only scratch the surface of. Most of us are still working on it!

Benny Goodman is my favorite . . . See the "underappreciated jazzers" thread for some other favorites of mine. I also like Ron Hockett of the Jim Cullum Jazz Band (heard weekly on Riverwalk), who I don't believe I listed in that other thread.

And there's plenty others, but those are just some who come to mind now!

I can hardly think right now, as i am still giddy from having heard Eddie Daniels live last night. There are a lot of great Clarinetists in this world today, but...my favorite? Well, he's it. For a good representation of his work, check out the album "Breakthrough."

Regards,
John

ARTIE SHAW.....the greatest of them all.
Sidney Bechet.....for the "old school".
Pete Fountain....first guy I heard as a kid.
Pee Wee Russel...another "old school".

JMcAulay just saw Eddie Daniels last night. I'm going tonight. He's at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. I'm curious if he changes my opinion of his style. Listening to his CDs, I kind of get the idea he's the Kenny G of clarinet.

Bottom line....ARTIE SHAW IS THE MAN.

And Eddie Daniels "the Kenny G of the clarinet"? Come on! Eddie is a great musician. Kenny G is a...nah! I won't even go there.

Well, Robert, Kenny G does sell more records than any other instrumentalist alive today. My biggest complaint with Mr. G is that I wish he'd play something besides lullabyes.

And I should have mentioned to John Gibson that he'll like the Eddie Daniels concert if he appreciates Benny Goodman music, because Eddie sure does.

John

I'm going to hear about this!

People like Kenny G., Winton Marsalis, Arturo Sandoval and, yes, Eddie Daniels, too, are great musicians. The very top of the heap with their individual instruments. Boy, that I could be that great at anything at all, never mind music!

But I find their music (and their playing) is boring as hell.

I just recently turned off a recording of Begin the Beguine by Eddie Daniels because it was such a barf! It had things in there that made the piece totally unrecognizable as what it was supposed to be. Argh!

In fact, somewhere I have a recording of Begin the Beguine, by some unknown yokel, playing with the BBC Big Band way back when that could have put even Artie Shaw to shame. I wish I knew who the guy was!

These guys, for one, pay too much attention to flourishes and showing off what they can do with their instruments and not enough attention to the music itself. After all, the show is not really about them, but about how well they can interpret the music. How entertaining they can be to their audience.

Sitting there listening to a bunch of solos of three or four different musicians playing their own individual "show-off" parts repeatedly, piece, after piece, is tortuous to me.

Even worse, sitting there and listening just to one musician for a couple of hours, or more, playing "show-off" routines is enough to make...never mind!

I had that problem with Al Hirt, too, as much as I liked him, otherwise! God rest him and hold him in His mercy!

People like Artie Shaw (and many others) knew how to get all their musicians involved in playing the music. That's what made the music they played. That's why it wasn't boring!

The worst part, to me, is enduring all the people (not to get more graphic and with all due respect to anyone who likes them) who go see them play and leave there excited and thinking they heard great music. They might have heard a great musician, but often the music is not so good the way they play it and all the show-off crap they add to it, and repeat, over and over, and over.

Of course, people who play the same instruments and go hear them play, rightfully think they are great, but in my humble opinion, they often mistake the expertise of the musician for a good music show.

(As some people have become fond of this word, I'll plegiarize it) DISCLAIMER: "This has been a personal opinion, only a a personal opinion, and nothing but personal opinion. Any resemblance between this personal opinion and anybody else's personal opinion, whether alive or dead, is purely coincidental."

Thank you, I'll just duck now!

Peter

I play New Orleans Jazz and the most important part of the that is the ensemble playing or as I like to describe it to non musicians 'collective improvisation' this is the mosr exciting thing about the old jazz from a musicians point of view, it involves listening to everybody else, the ears....the ears!! so in the kind of music I play the solo can become secondary, also in true New Orleans Jazz, you dont take solos, you lead while the other two or three front line instruments drop back for you, so the whole number from beginning to end is ensemble...kiss the joy as it flies.

Bazzer the Jazzer,

So, who do you like? I am hoping to concentrate on Dixieland. Being from the South and living in the Rockies, I don't get to hear too much of the N'awlins style. Thanks ahead of time.

I really like Sabine Meyer. Those recordings are excellent...especially the Mozart concerto. Pete Fountain is probably my all time favorite, though! :-)

I am still in love with Artie....of course it helps that I spent part of an afternoon with him last year. I know...brag, brag, brag.
The man could play....I just wish he hadn't quit and denied us the last 50 years without him. Listen to him on some of the Gershwin love songs, it is like listening to a vocalist. Such finesse.

For me, Don Byron. Another person I really enjoyed seeing in person at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee last year was Bob Draga. I also saw Abe Most & found him to be wonderful, unfortunately he passed away in either Oct. or Nov. of 2002.

AT last!!! Another Kenny Davern fan. But then there's Benny. I got his collection of "Small Groups", 3 CDs, and listen to one of them every day.
