 Capriccio Espagnol Recording
Author: Jerry
Date:   2003-02-07 21:32

A few years ago, I was impressed by a rendition of Capriccio Espagnol that had a real "up-front" and great sounding clarinet part, as opposed to a "buried in the back" or overly reverberant, masked sound quality of many recordings. I heard it on my car radio, and when I got a chance to call the station, they could not or would not retrieve the playlist. I recall it may have been a French orchestra, but not sure.

In any event, can anyone recommend an excellent rendition of this piece that does justice to the clarinet part?

Thanks,
Jerry

The best recording ever is Szell/Cleveland/Marcellus, but I don't think it's been reissued on CD. It's not too hard to find in cutout bins, though, and also has Capriccio Italienne, Polovtsian Dances and Prelude to Kovanshchina, all with Marcellus at his greatest.

I think that if my memory is correct, Marcellus told me that these recordings were during the season when he was playing a crystal mouthpiece (O'Brien, I believe). Maybe someone like David Hattner or Greg Smith can confirn this.

Can you describe the term "cutout bins?" Knowing what a cutout bin will help searching? Thanks.

Hi,

Cut-out bins are the place in a record/CD store where you might find old recordings, over-runs, very slow movers, used discs, and heavily discounted items. There is often not a lot of orgnization here but the prices are usually much lower and you can at times find some real treasures.

Yes, the russian album mention by Ken was made using an o'brien. And soon after he stopped using it and never played it again.

I agree with Ken that the Marcellus/Szell recording is the benchmark, and an important recording to study.

Another recording to consider (but difficult to find) is the 1984 Dutoit/Montreal recording with Emilio Iacurto playing principal. Very stylish playing.

Among the current catalog offerings, I like the recording by Rostropovich/Orchestre de Paris:
