Hi,
I live in the UK. Where can I get hold of first clarinet parts to the major orchestral works.
Also if anyone has a list of parts of works worth getting please let me know!

Alfred Publishing has compiled the complete Clarinet 1 parts for both the Beethoven and Tchaikovsky symphonies. I believe that this series is soon to be discontinued.
Check with Gary Van Cott (woodwind.org sponsor) to see if he has any still available...GBK

The 2 places in the US that sell parts that I have had good service from are: Edwin Kalmus http://kalmus-music.com and Lucks Music Library http://www.lucksmusic.net. They both have online order forms and accept credit cards. Lucks site says they ship outside the US. My guess is that Kalmus will as well but you should check with them.
Parts are very reasonably priced, usually between $5 and $10 US.

Unfortunately, the Beethoven is already gone. At one time Alfred published a whole series of these for many major composers and the main orchestral principal parts. They didn't sell very many and are in the end phase of letting them go out of print. They were a real bargin at $14.95 each.
I think the problem was Alfred's main market is school band and orchestra music.

I'm pretty sure it's International Music Co. (N.Y.) that has a huge collection. Each book has about 12 or 15 selections, and there are about 10 different books for each instrument. If it's not International, it's Southern Music. Signe

Not quite.
The International orchestral excerpts for clarinet were published in two sets of 4. Volumes 1-4 edited by McGinnis, and Volumes 5-8 edited by Drucker.
Drucker, however, never secured the necessary copyrights for Volumes 5-8 and the set was withdrawn.
The complete set has a number of errors and misprints. Consult the full scores. In a major audition, play one of the excerpts in the incorrect version found in the books and you are sure to be shown the door.
The fallacy with excerpt books is that they are just that - excerpt books.
Start learning and accumulating the complete parts. Study the full scores. Discover how your part is related to everything else around you.
There is so much more to successful orchestral playing than just learning the big solos. You never know when you will be asked to play one of the tutti passages...GBK
