I just bought two wooden mouthpieces. Should one swab them after playing? I never did that with my normal mouthpieces for fear of damaging the facing. What do you other wooden mouthpiece players do?

Swab with a soft cotton cloth --- but if the cloth has any seams or beading or stitching (e.g. the edges of a towel) avoid pulling those areas through the mouthpiece. By all means dry it thoroughly after use.

I usually wipe off the outside of the mouthpiece and set it aside to dry naturally before putting it back into its cushioned case. Swabbing the inside is not really necessary.

How does a wooden mouthpiece differ from hard rubber as far as the sound and feel?

I would treat a wooden mouthpiece the same way as a wooden clarinet ie. it is a good idea to dry it in some way. Be careful of the table and side rails they are a bit fragile.

You may want to search the BB for Greg Smith's comments on wooden mouthpiece care, and mouthpiece care in general. Since he is a maker of mouthpieces, he has much to offer in this area.

Thanks for your comments and advice. I'll definitely follow your suggestions.

GL asked "How does a wooden mouthpiece differ from hard rubber as far as the sound and feel?"

I don't know if it does. My wooden mouthpieces are for classical 5-keyed instruments, so I don't have any mouthpieces of other material to compare them with. Perhaps someone who plays modern wooden mouthpieces could answer that for you?
