 What gender is your clarinet.
Author: Josh Schultze
Date:   2003-02-06 14:32

Has anyone noticed a discernable tonal difference in the sound of their clarinet when one travels from country?

In Italy, Il mio clarinetto has a powerful, aggressive sound: moderatly manly.

In contrast, during my travels through Germany, meine Klarinette becomes gentle, soft and sweet sounding: fragrantly feminine.

When traveling across the Lowlands from Amsterdam to Ghent, mien clarinet seems to become a combination of moderately manly and fragrantly feminine. Yet the overall combination seems more 'common."

When I finally return to New York, my clarinet sounds very much like a piece of wood with hot air blowing through it.

Has anyone else noticed this amazing transformation in their clarinets?

Take care,
Josh

My clarinets are more like my wife. If I shower them with considerably TLC, remain faithful to my "one and only" brand, and practice regularily (use your own imaginations), my clarinets remain my loving companianons in (musical) life and reward my artistc needs with warmth and passionate (musical) expressions.

But if I ignor them for only one day, they can turn downright nasty!!!

No, but I do understand the hot air part :) :) :)

Actually, after all these years we've been together, I still don't know my clarinet's gender identity. Since she was born in Germany, I imagine she leans toward the feminine persuasion - with a masculine no-nonsense attitude.

However you feel about your instrument, Josh, may your journeys together bring you both many wonderful experiences :]

your clarinet will never say it doesn't love you anymore, or run off with a saxophone.

Let's see -- high-maintenance, needs to be held close, only performs when blown...

Maybe not, but ignore it or for no reason at all one day it may crackup and cost you a small fortune in medical bills!

Katrina, you say you have a turkish G, is it one of the metal ones, I was thinking of getting one a while ago but I was told by people in the know that they play wide of the mark when it comes to tuning, if I am wrong about the instrument ignore me, most people do, mostly when I am playing! Ho, Ho.

Absolutely. When ordering a new clarinet, make sure you specify whether you want the male or female version.

For the Buffet R-13, the model numbers are R-13M and R-13F...GBK

Bazzer,

I have a metal one. It is a bit weird intonationally but I don't mind. The Turkish makams need an instrument that can be more flexible than most, for all the quarter-tone inflections.

Katrina

p.s. My clarinets whether male or female play music just fine. Their gender does not influence the music, but my relationship with each does...LOL!

I've got a sneaking suspicion that one of my clarinets is gay. Perhaps I should let it out of the closet for a while?

My clarinet's name is Henry. 'Nuff said.

A funny thing I've noticed: Just because my clarinet has a name (which I rarely refer to it by), other people talk to it. *I* don't even talk to my clarinet! One of my friends always says, "Hi Benni, hi Henry!" or "Henry! How ya doin'?" when he sees me w/ my clarinet . . . ;-D

P.S. Henry is named Henry because it is a derivation of Henri, as in Henri Selmer. There was also a tune from the 1920's recorded by the Little Ramblers by the name of "Hot Henry!"

Unfortunately for us french speakers.
The gender of "la clarinette" is set for us by the language.
clarinet is feminine although basset horn "le cor de basset" is masculine...

Singularly violins, violas and cellos are masculin but the double bass is feminine, go figure!

Of course clarinets are feminine. Isn't that obvious from their insatiable appetite for expensive accessories? (I better duck now!)

My R13 Bb is Muffin, someone else named him. She said he's gay, he didn't come out to me for 2 whole years of us being together! My new RC A is Ricky, he's gay too. They both make some very interesting sounds!

Katrina
Thanks for the reply to my question about 'The G' I will re-think my thoughts on buying one, I am a jazz musician, but I do some work with folk, blues and cajun musicians, I use a 'C' clarinet with them, a 'G' would be very useful, thanks. I remember a few years ago a pop band asked me to do a recording with them, they did everything in concert E, my F#., I am not a good technical clarinet player so that key was a bugger for me, my old simple system 'C' was a God send.

Somehow, I have a feeling where Ken spends his Internet time when he's not here..... ;)

Can they be spayed or neutered?
If they go through menopause do you treat them with hormonal replacements?
My Bb just had a prostate operation...tone holes reamed out.

The humidity of air seems to make any instrument sound differently.
The lower, the more cheerfule and open. The higher, the darker.

Sylvain:

The feminine gender of "la clarinette" may or may not mean it's a girl. For the benefit of our anglophone friends, just to make sure they appreciate some of the delicious ironies of the French language..., the gender in French of most of the important distinguishing parts of the female anatomy is masculine. The gender of the word describing a temporary condition to which is subject the vital member of the male anatomy is feminine!

Vive la langue française!

My clarinet must be menopausal... Or maybe just gay? It's a rather tempramental instrument, and has it's occasional emotional mood swings. Or maybe it's just female. ::shrugs:: Perhaps it's a transvestite...

Ahh mine is a celibate. Kate is a female and my wooden medieval soprano recorder is Gertrude. Both give me such attitudes! Wonder where they learned it from. Really. Oy vey!

My clarinets are Paul (Bb) and Barnabas (A), definitely males, but my friend's are one male and one female. She was a little concerned that they were sleeping together in the same case before they were married.
