What's the use of a ligature when u can use an elastic band to hold the reed together with the mouthpiece?

I have successfully used a wide rubber band. It's kind of tacky though.

I think that ligatures probably last a little longer than rubber bands. I can see a point to what you are saying, it seems like many people on this board spend their life savings on ligatures hoping that they will be some sort of panacea.

I can see what is trying to be said here, but lets take into consideration that a good mouthpiece and ligature (along with great technique) can make or break one's tone. My advice? Spend some time at a local woodwind shop and try as many different brands as you can. You will eventually find one that you are willing to give your life's savings for...and it may even be a cheap one! It took me 10 years, but I found it!

ACTUALLY you can even play the clarinet WITHOUT a ligature- true, play an open G holding the reed on with your thumb, if you are taking in enough reed you should be able to remove your thumb and still play.

After my liggy broke one day, i used 2 of my sister's hair bands to hold the reed in place. it works much better than a ligature in my opinion because it allows more flexibility doesn't restrict the vibrations, which gives it a less-cracky, more-mellow tone. But it also depends a lot on the grip of your mouth when you play. Also realize that tone quality doesn't lie in the type of ligature or even the reed you use, but rather it is determined by yourself. By that i mean the way you blow, tighten your lips, how far your mouth is over the mouthpiece, junk like that. What is the Vandorem Optimum?
