 I need some advice!

Hello first of! I'm a sophomore in high school and am considering either getting a better Bb horn ( I have a 3 yr old E11) or an Eb soprano for marching band and occasional symphonic band pieces and to mess around on. I will probly be getting better horns when I go to college in 2 yrs. My E11 isnt a bad horn except the tuning is sometimes wide and the tone isnt what I want. I've always wanted an Eb clarinet to mess around on and just to have. The Eb would cheaper- the One I have my eye on is the Peter Spriggs hard rubbber student-$350. The Bb's that I'm looking at the YCL-64(super discounted at WW&BW) the E13 or Selmer Prologue II. Thank you for all advice in advance.

The big four seem to be, in no particular order, Leblanc, Buffet, Selmer and Yamaha. There are others like Patricola, Hammershmidt etc.. The YCL64 is a good horn and if the price is right and you like it go for it. It seems at times that this board has a de-facto Buffet sponsorship but there are alternatives.

I know that this is probably cliche, however I've played on Buffet R13's for years and have been VERY pleased with them. This particular model set the standard for the world-wide choice of clarinets, and has remained popular for almost 60 years, so why mess with tradition. Personally, I think you will be satisfied with this brand of horn for MANY years to come. I've had my latest set (Bb and A) for over 10 years now and have been pleased all the while. As for the Eb, if you can find one that has four seperate joints (barrel, upper, lower and bell) this will make a big difference in tuing in the band as you will be able to tune C below the staff and G above much easier if necessary. Hope this helps!

If you REALLY want to get new clarinets, go for the R13 like Anon suggested. I have been playing on an E11 for three years since my freshman year of High School (I'm a junior now). It has done great for me, and I don't plan on changing clarinets unless I have to. This one has gotten me through District Band (14th chair fresh. year, 5th soph, and 2nd this year), State Band (30th overall soph. year), many orchestral auditions of which I play principal (if anyone's in DC or northern Virginia come to our concert!!), solo festivals, competitions, etc. It has really done great. As for the Eb clarinet, make sure you REALLY want it. I went through a spurt where I wanted to get an Eb, but when I looked at the big picture: the price, why and when I'd use it, maintainance, intonation, etc., I decided it wasn't going to be worth it. If you have the money and are willing to spend it go for it, but otherwise, my advice is that a $350 dollar toy is a very expensive toy to take care it.
