 Artley Eb Alto Clarinet
Author: AltoGuy

I recently purchased a wood Artley Eb Alto Clarinet (used). It appears to be in terrific shape... The dealer (I bought it from a shop from which I have purchased other new instruments) told me that it had been overhauled, including new pads, etc. I paid $900 for it. Did I get ripped off??? I have seen other used altos for sale for much less, and I don't know much about Artleys.

Its possible that your alto was made by [or for - in France] the Lintons [earlier oboe and clar makers in Elkhart who may have been acquired by Armstrong-Conn?] {Mark, please unscramble this history}, in which case it may be very good [my experience is with an old Linton which our comm band alto player likes better than a newer plastic one!! My preferences are my Selmer and my earlier LeBlanc. Can you run down anything by serial numbers? Don

When you say it appears to be in terrific shape, are you speaking of the sound and response? Hopefully, you are. If it plays with a good sound, good response even on upper register notes with good intonation, I'd say that's a good price for a wood alto clarinet.

I'd be interested in what Mark may have to say on this too. No matter what I still would think it was a good buy. Enjoy it.
