believe me i have a LOT of music books. both in c and in Bb, however "just standards real book" is the best book i have ever purchased. it contains 250 really great songs, the notes are readable and the book has a spiral(?) binding. it's a little pricey but worth every dollar.
if you own this work let me know how you like it.

I agree. Some other versions of the real book including the original and the New Real Book had about 20% usable material and 80% transcriptions of stuff that is fairly useless. It is about time that music publishers used their brains!

I am always a sucker for standards books but as Mark says many have useless transcriptions. Where can one buy this book?

Doc, Amazon has it both in used and new. I think they have(had) three copies--or three entries--One, in eb, One in C and One in Bb. They also had one copy(?) used, though Powell Books. The new price was 27/28 bucks with 3.98 shipping. It was listed as a "paperback" so I don't know if that was with or without "spiral" binding. I'll let you know when I get mine ;-) Bob A

Doc I ordered mine from clarinetspot.com. it is a paper back with spiral binding. If you like the ballards of the 50's and 60's you will love this book. it is not a fake book. i have a fake book that has a 1000 songs in it and I never use the book.
This one is great.u

One of the best "fake" books I have come across is called simply, "The Book" and used to common in the Chicago, Il area.

Oh, no, that was that other town (Bridgeville or something like that) up there Have you heard how that turned out? The news folk seem to have dropped the story after the deal was done.
Well, obviously, You're still around so Philo probably hasn't changed mayors yet :]
Down around here it looks like Spring is trying the get an early start but I sure hope, before it comes waltzing in, we get some more rain.
Anyway, chit-chat aside, thanks for the tip re: Just Standards Real Book.
What's its 'layout'? Most fake books I've seen have melody line with chord symbols. Does the one you're talking about have piano score too?
I have a little 6"X9" handwritten fake book with 100 all time favorites. I like it a lot because I always tend to forget the 'bridge'. I don't know why, but I often seem to get to the bridge and just go blank. Very frustrating sometimes. But, anyway, I've been sorta looking around for something with a few more tunes and it looks like the one you mention might be pretty good. I'd be interested in checking out the table of contents.
I've found, over the years, that no matter how "obscure" we think some of those long-forgatten transcriptions may be, you're bound to find someone/sometime in the crowd who suddenly remembers it... and wants you to play it! hahahaha - happened to me several times. Happy then is the day, or night, when the piano player remembered to bring all nine fake books to the gig :]
Anyway, thanks for posting the info, Bob. I'm sure many of us'll want to check into it.

I definitely give the Standards Real Book a thumbs-up on 2 fronts. First, the fact that it contains standard songs as opposed to page after page of Steve Swallow/Gary Burton tunes that must've found their way in via the Berklee connection.
Most important, though, is the quality of the well-thought-out chord changes. Too often, fake books have been made by pasting in the vocal lines and guitar chords from piano sheet music. These generally contain a great clutter of unnecessary chords which attempt to address every melody note and bass note into the chord nomenclature. The Real Books have always provided logical, uncluttered chord progressions that address the song's true structure and leave players some mental breathing room.
I bring that subject up because it's the one flaw that I've found with The Book. The Book is a fantastic source of standards, specialty tunes and ethnic tunes, but much of it suffers from the 'pasted up piano music' syndrome. I would love to see a Real Book quality version of it.

There's a whole raft of "Real" books out there, including some published by Hal Leonard. Just trying to sort them out.
