Actually, mister Galper has a gorgeous tone! I downloaded the 1st movement of the Krommer concerto from mp3.com.

Abe is a friend of mine & sponsor here. That being said, his key has corrected intonation problems in some but not all of the Buffets it's been installed in.

Although I haven't tried it I have heard mixed reviews about it.
I have a friend who has one and loves it and another who had his removed.
I think it can work well. It would be great if you could have one fine tuned for your specific instrument.

looks interesting- re the comment "the register vent is too short"... well, as i understood it the main problem is that it is either 1) too small in diameter (ie, the size of the hole) to make a good B flat OR 2) too far down the instrument to produce good 12ths on the upper left hand notes.
On my R13 i have the standard vent- the Bflat is fine if i use the "resonance fingering" that i have known since i was about 13, and these days that doesn't seem so bad. However i am getting increasingly annoyed with the wide 12ths, and have been considering getting a register key installed that places the hole higher on the instrument.
i also have a register tube that has a smaller diameter (but fits in the same hole).... when this is installed the intonation on the clarinet is improved greatly (without the hole having to be moved!), EXCEPT for the quality of the B flat- which now becomes out of tune and stuffy.
Perhaps Mr Galphers register tube would work for me- it certainly would be easier to install this than to have a "longer" key installed (and thus have to move the hole upwards).

Interesting . . . It sort of looks like a really tiny brass mpc. hehe ;-) Anyway, I think on some clarinets the stuffiness in the throat Bb is also due to the key height. Of course if the key is too far off the body, you get undertones on the upper clarion notes.

This is sort of on topic, so I guess I'll ask it here: Does anyone know the purpose of the large metal plate around the outside of the register key hole on the older Selmers? The Series 9 has one, and I believe the BT and CT do as well.

If I got one and tried it, and it didn't do much for my particular instrument, I could just get the normal register key put back on, couldn't I?

Yes. You pop the old register tube, pop a new one in, and replace the register key to install. Undoing the installation is just as easy.

Morrigan, I have one of these gadgets. It took me some 2 weeks to get used to it (I only practice about 1 hr a day), and in that time switched back and forth several times. It is now a permanent fixture on my R 13. The drawback is the price, if you decide you do not like it.
