 Alexander reeds
Author: Ted

I don't know if there have been any threads on Alexander reeds for clarint. I just bought a box to try and had, shall we say, very mixed results.I'd like to hear some responses and then I'll comment further. I'll just say I was very surprised with the "quality" or lack of. Thanks - TD

they come in a really nice tin- if you glue foam in to the bottom and lid, it is a nice reed holder.
otherwise i've had no luck with these reeds at all (tried them in 1995, 1997, 2001)
BUT i do remember hearing Jerry Smith play the Quartet for the end of Time (1995?), and was really impressed with his tone... when i spoke to him afterwards he told me that he was playing an Alexander Superial reed.

Just a thought. Maybe we (those who tried these)were/are too impatient? They come with a very detailed precise set of instructions (conditions) that prevail on how to get the best from their reeds.

I have had good luck with the Alexander alto and tenor sax reeds. All five in the box of five were good. They lasted well also. I don't find it good to soak them as long as they say to do before playing. I just put them in water for about ten seconds (equivalent I feel to putting the reed in my mouth for about a minute) and then dry them between my fingers and put them on the mouthpiece. This works best for me.

After many emails with Tom Alexander I finally did the prep as the insert explains and the reeds worked a whole lot better. They were too soft form me But the quality of the cane and the sound they produce (even as a soft reed)makes me want to try them at a stronger number. It's worth the time to prep them - Ted
