 Mouthpiece questions
Author: SteveT

I play an R-13 with a VanDoren B45. The mouthpiece plays very well. It plays freely and has good tone. The music I play is pretty well restricted to the standards. The sound I want from a mouthpiece is a relaxed and warm sound, not the bright jazz sound or the very dark classical. Two questions:

1. Is the B45 the best mouthpiece for the music I play and the sound I want?

2. How much a difference in quality is there between the off the shelf MP's and the hand faced MP's?

Thanks

I play Vandoren B45 and relay like it a lot. I own 2 Walter Grabner's mouthpieces, 7 Chedeville mouthpieces, E&S/Chedeville, European custom made (chedeville blank), Bonade, K10M, M13Lyre, B40, Vintage Buffet wood, Prohaska 3, Marcellus M13, Selmer Table E and.... All these are fine mouthpieces but my B45 is the best! Go figure......V

You are lucky to find a really good B45. I had several B45's, and I did have one good one. I now use a Greg Smith mouthpiece. Sandra

Just goes to show ya! Personally, my B45 doesn't do it for me.

The B45 has not been working that great for me. Its OK but it just doesnt have the right feel for playing jazz. I too do not want a bright mouthpiece because i will also be using it in legit situations. I just ordered a Morgan RM28 (B stock) from Ralph Morgan. He said that facing will feel like a B45 setup. I loved one i tried a while ago and vowed i would get one. I love morgans on sax too.

Sinkdrain

Let me know about the Morgan RM28. I have been giving that some thought. I do have a Morgan R15. It is one of his first pieces of that model. It has the model number hand engraved on it!! It has a very nice tone, but does not have the same projection and body of my B45.

By the way my B45 played terrible when I first got it. I leveled the lay (the right word?) and it popped in very nicely.
