Man, was I inspired by the great film noir classic, "Force of Evil."(John Garfield is in it). To think, greats like Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw saw movies like these in theaters and were probably inspired by them. What movies from the 30s, 40s, and 50s have inspired you (to write or listen to music). Boy, to have been able to see "Force of Evil" when it premiered, and then hopped over to the Paramount!

For a great old film, try "Second Chorus" starring Burgess Meridieth and Fred Astaire. Basic story is a comedy about two college musicians trying to get into one of the name big bands of the thirties. As a real treat, it features numerous appearances by Artie Shaw and his band including a snippet of Him playing his Clarinet Concerto--written expescially for this film.
Also, since you mentioned the 50's, my most memorable viewing was as a high school freshman guest of our local music store to attend the premire showing of "The Benny Goodman Story". That movie singlehandly inspired me to want to be the best clarinetist in the world.......and I am still trying, after all these years!
(watch out Mr Combs, Moses, Niedich, Hat, Stolzman, Bilk [opps--"senior moment], Smith, Smith (Willy O), Hedges, Bruce-Yeh, Raviera, Moreles--did I miss any????)

They don't make films like that any more. Kids these days just have Harry Kim as a role model.
