I'm a college student in Providence, RI, and I'm looking for a clarinet teacher in the Providence area...I have been playing the clarinet for 10 years and need to find someone who can teach at the advanced level. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Haha...I had to laugh at that. I grew up in RI and studied with a couple people in the state. One of them lived is East Greenwich and has metamorphasized into a violist/conductor. Sounds like a set-up for a good joke but it's not. Then I had to travel to New Haven. Maybe go to Axelrod (the music store near the Performing Arts Center) and ask them for names. The players in the Philharmonic (Ian Grietzer and Tom Martins) are great but (I'm pretty sure) live in Boston. Are you at Brown? Someone in the music department might have some suggestions.

You could check at PC and RIC, too. I heard PC has a really great clarinet teacher.

Ian Greitzer plays in the Boston Esplanade Pops usually, and ocasionally subs with the Boston Pops. He has never, to my knowledge, played in the Boston Philharmonic, where Thomas Hill is the Principal. Tom Martin is in the Boston Symphony Orchestra as well as the Boston Pops. Yes, they are all based in Boston, but you never know who travels to where unless you ask. If you are willing to go all the way to Boston, there are numerous options.
As far as New Haven, there are some exceptional clarinetists in the area, especially in and around Yale. Shifrin is in and out, from what I understand. Larry McDonald is around. There are some excellent students (and ex-students) that are still in the area. There are also the members of the New Haven Symphony. All of these are places to search for a teacher.

I certainly was referring to the RI Phil. Also, David Shifrin (in addition to being on a sabbatical from Yale) doesn't give ANY lessons to people who aren't in his Yale studio or alumni of it. I assumed the student wouldn't really be able to travel so I didn't give names. In the New Haven area though, I would highly recommend Jim Forgey. Dan Spitzer (the principal of the NHSO) is a fanastic player but lives in New Jersey.
