 Plastic Eefers

I am currently interested in looking for a Eb soprano i can use in marching band plus symphonic band ( obviously has to be plastic). The only plastic ones that I know are the Vito, Selmer, amd Yamaha- which of three(if any) has anyone tries and like/disliked? I would go for a wooden one but I dont want to play it outdoors and they cost more than Bb's usually. Any advice will be welcome. Of course when I get the chance( and the money:-)) I'll look into trying all three if possible, to see which of the three I like. -Corey

Corey,

Doesn't your school have Eb clarinets? Most schools have at least one, or know where to "borrow" one from another school, if it is a public school. You might want to look into that before you go out and buy one.

As I have said before, I keep a plastic clarinet for when I get lazy and don't feel like dealing with a wood one after playing, or when I travel and don't want to chance destroying a good instrument, etc.

Well, the truth is that I have two. The second one is an old Selmer 810 Eb soprano and I often take it places with me, especially when I'm cramped for room.

It's not a great clarinet, but it can play fairly well if you are not too nit-picky about it.

It's fairly well in tune with itself, not too far off, but about three cents sharp across the board, give or take a cent here and there.

It's not the best, but it will do in a pinch. Play the one you are going to buy and take a tuner with you when you do.

Except for playing it outdoors, especially in marching band, you'd really be better off with at least, an intermediate student clarinet right off the bat.

I can recommend the Bundy Resonite. Nice tone.

I used to have a Boosey & Hawkes Imperial E flat made of ebonite which was a splendid insrument. There may be some still around 2nd hand.

I'm happy with my plastic Bundy. Plays well for what I need (occasional concert band and marching band). I got lucky and picked it up in good condition for $200.

Not all schools keep Eb clarinets. A lot of the standard concert band type literature doesn't come with Eb clarinet parts these days. My high school had just about everything except the Eb (alto, bass, french horns, a bassoon, spares of all the main instruments), just because my band director didn't want to deal with giving up one of his more talented players to play it, and there wasn't enough literature to warrant it. If it was really needed for something, it was taken care of (ie. someone got a hold of one or it was transposed/given to another instrument). Similar situation with my community band. Two of us own Ebs, but quite a few pieces just don't call for it. Mainly just the marches and "bigger" pieces.

I tried my friend's Selmer, and did not like it!

I got spoiled on a wooden Leblanc before trying the Selmer, though.
