While not yet definite, I may soon be demonstrating the clarinet's role in jazz for a local university class. The class covers essentially the entire history of jazz. Could someone please suggest pieces/solos I should demonstrate---also--- what would be the best attire for such a demonstration? Thanks!!!

I did a lecture on all girl jazz bands of the 30's and 40's last year and dressed in period attire. Men's attire, not women's. I had a pinstriped navy suit, art-deco looking tie, cuff links, and black and white spectator shoes. The outfit was a hit. Look through jazz history books or album/cd jackets for the clothing styles.
What time period will you be covering? If you are looking to demonstrate big band/swing you might look into playing Begin the Beguine, Stardust, Dancing in the Dark or Frenesi....those are some of Artie Shaw's best known pieces. There are several books of Benny Goodman solos that can be purchased on the internet through sheetmusicplus.
I had a great time lecturing, but didn't have time to play.

Turn the topic into a subtopic and cover a sensible time period. Try isolating swing clarinet or traditional clarinet; maybe bebop covering the work of Eddie Daniels Eddie Daniels, Buddy Defranco and such like. Play some blues on an Albert system clarinet, a'la Bigard, Jimmie Noone et. al.. The possibilities are endless but concentrate on a particular part and make generalitites about the rest of the history of jazz.
