The device I am refering to is the plasic vial with mouth pipe and ball used to increase breath control and support.
Can somebody who has used this comment on it's long/short term effectiveness.

I have my beginners use them. It teaches them how to <b>inhale</b> properly. My focus is on taking enough air <b>in</b> so that it can be used properly for good tone production.

Yes, I've used one, and would like to own one - where can you get them? I think that they're just a fish tank filter with ping-pong ball in, and you attach a plastic tube.

I know WW&BW has them in their catalog. If that's not an option in AU, you could try a medical supply store. It looks like the same thing they had my mother-in-law using in the hospital for a while.

They're called long tones... and you don't need a gizmo from respiratory therapy to get the same training effect.
Now go play your Baermann and breath where indicated.
(Keep a circle of pillows around your chair for safety.)

After surgery many years ago the nurse brought in something like was described. I believe they used it as pneumonia prevention. The first day after surgery I could barely suck the ball up into the tube. Before I could go home I had to get the thing all the way up and hold it for several seconds.

Late Arnold Jacob, Famous CSO trombonist, invented it.
Try to keep the ball floating while inhaling or exhaling.
Good thing is you can see how you breath properly.
Especially effective for very young pupils.
