???
Finale is score creation program. How did you "use your clarinet for input"?

I own a copy of Finale 2002, and my comments echo Mark's.

I have Finale 2001, so I don't know if 2002 is the same. But in 2001, you can record music via the Hyperscribe feature. You hook up a microphone to your sound card mic input and then you get the hyperscribe started and play into the mike. My experience is that it is not even close to accurate, it picks up all kinds of background noise and sends it into the stratosphere of high notes and in general, it is not very useful. I don't know if 2002 or 2003 have improved functionality. But if anyone has had success with it, I'd like to know if there are special settings that make it functional.

Finale has a feature called MicNotator that allows "users to input notes via a wind instrument instead of a MIDI keyboard." (from the users' manual). I've never tried it so I don't know how well it works. It's not intended to be a recording machine. The manual instructs users to think of their instrument as a typewriter when using it.

Timothy, there are volume settings for the mic level, input volume and output volume. To find them, choose MicNotator from the Midi pull-down menu. Finale converts your input to midi format so you should be able to see what you played in score form. The output will be a synthesized instrument and not necessarily a clarinet. If you haven't already, use your instrument settings to select a clarinet as the output instrument. Your problem might be that you are playing back as an midi "instrument" that is extremely soft, such as seashore. Otherwise, check your midi volume setup in your Control Panel and also look up "volume" in your users' manual.

Best regards,
jn

Jack, was MicNotator in Finale 2002? I have a copy (not installed right now but it used to be) and I don't remember that being in there. Not that I've used every capability of Finale, either ...

Hi Mark,

My version is actually 2001. I guess Coda might have dropped the feature in later versions but that seems like sacrilege for a software manufacturer. Drop a feature? ;^) Their site doesn't mention it as being in 2003, though, as far as I can tell. I have a friend with a newer version. I'll try to remember to ask her to check for me when I see her later this week if no one answers this question sooner.

I assumed, since Timothy apparently had found a way to use his clarinet as an input device that MicNotator was the way he did it.

Best regards,
jnk

I just checked my Finale 2002. MicNotator is in there.
You can find it in the manual.
Chapter 8 -- the MIDI menu: MicNotator

You can also find it on the Toolbar: Midi Menu, then MicNotator.

fwiw, that sound recording feature is also incorporated in Coda's lower-end "PrintMusic".
I can't comment on its utility; I'm still trying to get the scanning function to work more efficiently than the manual (handwritten) method.

Manual? You have a real manual? ;^)

I keep upgrading mine so my manuals are ancient. It's probably in the upgrade notes from some version back.

Thanks. Someday I'll reload it and give MicNotator a whirl.

"rea" manual?

Only the one in the toolbar under HELP then User Manual.

Alas, not a paperback book that I can sit there and look at and follow directions while I work on Finale files.

I have a set that came with Finale (98? 97?).

Pet Peeve - software that comes with only PDF files or online Help for "manuals".
