 Deg Accubore Barrel
Author: sinkdraiN

Im looking for a replacement for a cracked barrel to my Leblanc LL. I guess I have a few choices. I could order a new LL barrel or an Opus barrel (i read some like it on the LL) or I could get an Accubore. I see these models:

DEG : Original and Classic
Eddie Daniels: Classic, Moenig Round Sound, and Moenig Power

Are these barrels worth looking into? Does the aluminum sound inferior to a wood barrel? What are your experiences with the various models?

I play clarinet 60% in orchestra and 40% pits and swing bands

I wasn't happy with the Eddie Daniels Moennig round sound---in addition, it had a burr on the inner lip that left scratches on the top tenon of my instrument.

Any replacement barrel might make a mark on your instrument and not fit quite like the original equipment. The Deg Eddie Daniels is a good match for the LL or any Leblanc. I have used them for years on LLs and other Leblancs. The Opus doesn't have the same bore dimension as the LL, so that is something to consider. My advice would be to have all these potential barrels sent out to you on approval from IMS or Woodwind and Brasswind. They will charge your credit card, but when you return the unwanted ones you will be credited. It would be worth the trouble.

Just to muddy the waters, perhaps Phil Muncy could make a barrel to your specification? It may cost a bit more than the DEG version.

I played a Leblanc LL for a number of years using the Accubore Eddie Daniels Moenig Round and Moenig Power. I had good results with the Round model using my Vandoren B45 mouthpiece. By good results I mean good pitch, good resistance, and a nice sound. The Power model gives you a more piercing sound that I am not partial to, but could be useful in a big band situation. One great thing about the Accubores, besides their price, is that they warm up quickly--a nice feature if you double or switch horns during performances.
